Murder in two independent counts

SAPS counts murders reported to the police (financial year 2024/25). Stats SA counts deaths certified as assault from death notification forms (calendar year 2024). They measure the same harm through different systems.

SAPS murders, 2024/25Stats SA assault deaths, 2024
SAPS murders are about 3.3 times the assault deaths in death notifications. Stats SA warns that over three-quarters of non-natural deaths are not precisely classified (most are coded as accidental injury or undetermined), so its assault count is likely an undercount of homicide. Gauteng is the outlier: first for SAPS murders but fourth for assault deaths, about 5.2 times higher in police records against 1.5 to 3.6 times elsewhere.

Assaults by a spouse or partner

Share of assault incidents committed by a spouse or intimate partner, by the victim's sex, 2025/26. A share of incidents, not of people: someone assaulted twice counts twice.
31.4% women
2.2% men

Men are assaulted more often overall (see the gap chart), but women's assaults are far more likely to happen at the hands of a spouse or intimate partner — a 14× gap on this one measure.
